Autoparts Garage Equipment (AGE), one of the largest suppliers of garage equipment in the UK, recently completed an MOT installation at Ayr Whitfield Preparation Centre and explains what garages need to be mindful of when undertaking an MOT Testing facility installation.

AGE’s initial design brief consisted of a 12-bay used car preparation workshop that could process up to 800 vehicles per month. The design brief also asked for a twin Class IV & VII MOT testing facility and a full Smart Repair Centre.

The project specification required a complete air, oil and water delivery solution and LEV Extraction, to cover two workshops and the twin MOT test bays.

The biggest challenge for this project was the timescale given to complete the work. This was achieved by ensuring all the required equipment was in stock prior to the start date and coordinating its engineering teams, to ensure that it could dedicate sufficient man hours to complete the project within the tight deadline. Hard work and positivity ensured Garage Equipment hit the deadline.

A fully equipped Smart Repair centre was also installed by the team, to ensure that all cosmetic preparation could be carried out on site. This consisted of one oven, a paint mixing room and a new dust plant system. They also installed a wheel lathe, along with tyre changing and balancing equipment, to facilitate the refurbishment of Diamond Cut wheels up to 22-inch.

In addition, a new three bay Covered WET valet bay was required, which was completed with three Electrajet Cabinet pressure washers to ensure all year-round

MOT Testing facility installation: the three-step process

  1. Survey

Before embarking on a new or upgraded MOT bay, it is recommended to discuss your requirements with a professional installer, who can ascertain a preferred equipment brand or advise on the best products in order to meet specific expectations.

Once this has been done, a building survey will need to be completed to ensure a centre’s MOT fits and conforms to DVSA regulations. In the case of AGE, its site specialists will pass this detail to the Computer Aided Design (CAD) team who will then move the process onto the next stage.

  1. Design

Trained CAD operatives are fully conversant with the challenges faced when designing or redeveloping a workshop or bodyshop. With this in mind, any installer worth its salt will create a design implemented with the maximum profitability.

  1. Installation

Once the system’s design has been finalised, the installation can get underway.
